The COVID-19 pandemic presents an unprecedented challenge to the capacity of healthcare systems and providers across Michigan, across the nation and across the globe. Now, more than ever, ensuring the appropriate use of medical resources through High Value Care is of paramount concern.
Reducing the unnecessary use of lab tests and imaging studies in all patients is critical to conserve medical supplies and to lessen the burden on nursing, lab and imaging staff. Reduced patient testing can also help to conserve personal protective equipment.
The blood supply has already been significantly impacted as blood donations have dipped due to the cancellation of blood drives and people remaining home to avoid crowded areas. It is therefore important to strictly follow the evidence based transfusion guidelines, transfuse the minimum effective dose, and consider the use of transfusion alternatives such as IV iron and blood cell recycling in the operating room.
